Commissioners Respond to Citizens’ Requests, Build New Sidewalks to Safely Accommodate Pedestrian Traffic

Prompted by community needs identified by residents, the Charles County Commissioners celebrated recently the completion of two new sidewalks in the development district in Waldorf.  The sidewalks, located along Western Parkway and Smallwood Drive respectively, are more than just a nice amenity for the neighborhood.  The sidewalks offer a safe place for pedestrians to walk to and from nearby retail stores, the St. Charles Towne Center Mall, and the commuter parking lot.   (Read Article)  

Commissioners Break Ground on New Waldorf Branch Library

On Wednesday, September 1, the Charles County Commissioners held a groundbreaking ceremony for the soon-to-be-built Waldorf West Library at O’Donnell Lake.  The Waldorf West Branch library will be a Community Center and will be dedicated to programs and services that provide children, parents, and other adults with the knowledge, skills, resources, experiences, and the environment needed to allow everyone to fully participate in the emerging digital world of the early 21st Century.  (Read Article)  

Secrets of a "Green" Lawn Workshop Scheduled for September 8

How well is your lawn recovering from the hot, humid weather this fall? While you are getting it back in shape this fall, do you really think about what you are doing and how it effects water quality in our area?  The Charles County Commissioners and the University of Maryland Extension, Charles County are pleased to provide a Secrets of a “Green” Lawn workshop, which teaches how to grow a great lawn while also protecting the environment. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, September 8 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Charles County Cooperative Extension Office, 9375 Chesapeake Street, #119 in La Plata.  (Read Article)  

Charles County Government Offices Closed on Labor Day

The Charles County Commissioners wish to remind residents that the offices of Charles County Government, the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville, MD, the Charles County Landfill and Composting Facility off Billingsley Road in Waldorf, and the Pisgah Recycling Center on Route 425 in Pisgah will be closed on Monday, September 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.  Every-other-week curbside recycling “blue bin” collection service will be affected by the holiday. There will be no pick up on Monday, September 6. Those on the Monday “A” Week Schedule will have their recyclables picked up on Tuesday, September 7. Those on the Tuesday “A” Week Schedule will have their recyclables picked up on Wednesday, September 8. Thursday and Friday “A” Week service is not affected. Weekly yard waste curbside collection will also be affected by the holiday. Those with Monday collection service will have their yard waste picked up on Tuesday, September 7. Those with Tuesday collection service will have their yard waste picked up on Wednesday, September 8. Thursday and Friday service is not affected. Patterson Selected for MACo Leadership Role

During the Summer Conference, the MACo Board of Directors met to confirm new members to the MACo leadership team. Charles County Commissioner Vice President Edith J. Patterson was voted to serve on the MACo Board of Directors.  Commissioner Patterson has served on the Charles County Board of Commissioners since 2005. Previously, Commissioner Patterson served 12 years on the Charles County Board of Education, serving during her tenure as both its President and Vice President. She has received degrees from from Virginia Union University and Bowie State College, and her Ed. D. from George Washington University. She was recently appointed by the Governor to serve as one of the MACo representatives to the Blue Ribbon Commission on Transportation Funding.  

Charles County Commissioners Name Settlement Company “Entrepreneur of the Month”

The Charles County Commissioners named Buyer’s Title, Inc., a La Plata, Md., real estate settlement company the “Soar Like an Eagle Entrepreneur of the Month” for July 2010. During their weekly session on Tuesday, July 13, the Commissioners recognized Buyer’s Title Inc., a full service settlement company as the County’s “Entrepreneur of the Month”.  The Commissioners presented Company President and Owner Terri Jarboe-Farri with a plaque and a proclamation to mark the honor.  (Read Article)
